On July 18, 2023, the Diplomatic Academy of Ukraine, in collaboration with the Embassy of Ukraine in Kuwait, unveiled the first Ukrainian translation of Kuwaiti short stories titled "In Search of Precious Pearls". This historic publication includes 22 short stories by 10 Kuwaiti authors, offering a unique portrayal of Kuwait’s rich and mysterious culture rooted in deep social and family values.
The online presentation featured introductory remarks from Mr. Hennadii Nadolenko, Director of the Diplomatic Academy of Ukraine. Ambassador of Ukraine to the State of Kuwait, Dr. Oleksandr Balanutsa, and Third Secretary of the Embassy, author and compiler Dr. Olha Seheda, discussed the significance of cultural diplomacy and the role of such projects in enhancing bilateral relations.
Mr. Hennadii Nadolenko emphasized the historical importance of the translation, noting, "This first edition of Kuwaiti short stories in Ukrainian marks a significant milestone, strengthening our ties with Kuwait and fostering new avenues for mutual understanding and cooperation between our peoples".
Ambassador Dr. Balanutsa highlighted the broader implications of literary projects for Ukraine's public diplomacy plan , stating, "Projects like our collection of Kuwaiti short stories in Ukrainian serve as cultural bridges, enhancing the bilateral relations. Each Ukrainian Embassy abroad strives to identify and develop projects that find common ground with countries of accreditation. In Kuwait, this includes supporting Ukraine in its defensive efforts and increasing assistance".
Dr. Olha Seheda reflected on the broader impact of translation in diplomacy, remarking, "As a diplomat and compiler, I am confident that the role of Ukrainian translators of Arabic literature is pivotal, especially as Ukraine begins a new phase of engagement with the Global South, including the Arab world. Literature, more than analytical studies or news reports, can reveal the mental nuances, traumas, or pride of a people in ways that other means cannot".
