On November 23, 2019, to mark the 86th anniversary of the Holodomor tragedy, the staff of the Embassy of Ukraine in Kuwait participated in the All-Ukrainian campaign "Light a Candle" to honor the memory of the victims of the 1932-1933 Genocide-Holodomor in Ukraine.
During 1932-1933, the Bolsheviks used hunger as a weapon of mass destruction, leading to the deaths of millions and the starvation of tens of millions. Thousands of homes were left empty, families were torn apart, and a vast number of individuals became homeless and orphaned. The communist regime endeavored to ensure that the voices of the witnesses to this atrocity were never heard. However, they did not succeed.
The Holodomor may have silenced the Ukrainians of the Ukrainian SSR at the time, but it could not erase the harrowing memories of 1932-1933. With the attainment of independence, the voices of the witnesses resounded forcefully. These voices recount the reasons behind the Holodomor, its execution, and the experiences of death and survival. They discuss life and its preservation, degradation and dignity, and the suppression and revival of memories. These narratives are vital; they remind us of the cost of our lives, our country’s independence, and the price of losing it.
